Advertising and Movies

We don't go to the movies very often. Though we love the experience of the big screen, we don't love the price. With four children, we really can't justify the expense of going often, so we usually go as a family 2-3 times a year.

Yesterday, we saw "Horton Hears a Who." We loved the movie!!

Before the movie, the theater was playing commercials. We were just barely on time to the theater, so we thought we might have avoided most--if not all--of the commercials. We didn't and, in fact, there was a full length WEIGHT LOSS DRUG commercial! At a rated G movie!

I was horrified. We watch very little TV in our house, most of which is educational on the History channel or Discovery channel. One of the primary reasons is because of the horrible commercials.

After the movie, I stopped to talk to the manager of the theater. I said to him, "Do you realize you are showing weight loss drug commercials before a rated G movie?" He said, "Which drug?" I was thrown off guard. "What drug? Um, I didn't pay attention, but it was before Horton Hears a Who at 11:30 a.m." He replied, "Oh, well, I'll tell someone about it."

I supposed I should have been reassured that he said he'd tell someone, but it seemed rather insincere. His lack of shock was a shock to me and made me wonder if he thought I was just a crazy overprotective mom.

I suppose I am.
